British-Passports Endorsements and help-lines

Safe-conduct documents have been around in United Kingdom since medieval-ages when these used to be handed out to the foreigners and subjects while travelling to different countries. Any queries regarding passports, modifications, can be answered by the dedicated passport helpline of HMPO, UK. Endorsement is certain note written by the government officials, in British-Passports, usually found with block letters (capitals letters). Following are a few examples of endorsements in passports.

  • Right to live in UK

The nationals (generally from Ireland) comprise a note written in the passports as “The holder is entitled to right of abode in the United Kingdom” meaning that they are permitted to live in UK. The unrestricted right-to-live in the UK was brought in by the Immigration-Act of 1971.

  • Readmission

Certain citizens without the right-of-aboard might not be entitled to stay permanently in United Kingdom. They may remain or leave from United Kingdom but are bound by time. In such cases their passport’s observation page has text mentioning this formally as “The holder is entitled to readmission in the United Kingdom”. This entitlement is a bit different from the right-of-abode as that person is not a resident but is allowed stay for employment or studies in the United Kingdom, without any time frame that restricts their stay.

  • British-National-Overseas

In case of certain citizenships, the passport will have a special endorsement to indicate this. It is not possible for a person of a country to possess passports of a different country. This additional-status of a citizenship abroad is indicated by a text saying “The holder is also a British National (Overseas)”

In case you wish to have a different name to be displayed in your passport, for instance the birth name might be different from the official name. Also certain scenarios where the names are longer than the standard thirty character limit then the passport will indicate it separately as an endorsement “The Holder is also known as ”. In case of longer names it is written with the first-name followed by the remaining capital letters separated by spaces. This long name will be expanded in the endorsement in the Official-Observation-Page in the passport.

  • Dependants of Diplomats

In case the holder is spouse or dependant of a British Diplomat, then they have it indicated in their passport as “Holder is a dependant of a member of Her Britannic Majesty's Diplomatic Service”
